At Ramsey Creek Kennels in Lexington, Indiana, we raise Shichon puppies, better known as Teddy Bear puppies. A cross of the Shih Tzu and the Bichon Frise, the Shichon is soft, sweet and made for family life.

What Is a Shichon?

A Shichon is a cross between a Shih Tzu and a Bichon Frise, also called a Zuchon or, most often, a Teddy Bear dog for its round face and plush coat. The cross became popular in the 1990s and remains one of the best-loved small companion crosses.

How Big Do Shichons Get?

• Height: about 9–12 inches
• Weight: about 10–20 pounds
• Life expectancy: about 12–15 years

Coat, Colors and Grooming

The Shichon's soft, wavy to curly coat comes in almost any color, including white, cream, apricot, brown, black and combinations. It sheds very little, but it does need brushing several times a week and a trim every six to eight weeks to stay mat-free. No dog is completely hypoallergenic.

Temperament

Shichons are playful, affectionate and people-loving, usually excellent with children and other pets. They are cheerful little dogs who want to be in the middle of family life and do not like being left alone for long.

Training and Exercise

Bright and eager to please, Shichons do well with short, positive training sessions; house-training benefits from a consistent routine. Their exercise needs are modest: a daily walk and indoor play are plenty.
